London-based photographer Gideon Mendel, has been documenting the devastating floods in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul for the last couple of weeks! The floods, which so far have killed over 170 people (with many still missing), followed heavy rains beginning in late April, have affected over 2.3 million people, with more than 620,000 citizens being displaced! Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva described it as a ‘Climate Disaster’. Gideon's ex-neighbor, Cecilia Malan, the London correspondent of O Globo, Brazil's largest news network, documented the making of Gideon's powerful portraits.
